After attending a concert with Megabyte, Adam literally bumps into Lucy Allan, a young American girl who hurries off in a taxi, accidentally leaving her travelpass behind. Meanwhile, at a house in Bayswater, a burglar busy ransacking the premises discovers some strange equipment in a basement laboratory; the apparatus activates, blasts the burglar with freezing cold air and sends him crashing through a window. Lucy’s cab narrowly misses the injured felon as he collapses in the road, and when the police arrive, Lucy is intrigued to learn that the man is suffering from frostbite in the middle of summer. The next day, Adam arrives at the address on the travelpass, where Lucy is preparing to start work as a journalist at a local newspaper. Instantly making friends, they both head for the offices of ‘The Reporter’, where the editor, Mr Bishop, gives in to Lucy’s overbearing eagerness and assigns her the task of covering a dog show; indignant, Lucy decides to investigate the events of the previous evening instead. Megabyte samples a new breakfast cereal, ‘Colonel Cobb’s Crinkles’, at a supermarket, only to discover that it tastes revolting. Lucy and Adam investigate the only house in the area having its windows repaired, but are prevented from entering by an electric fence; Lucy agrees to meet Adam the next day, but then returns with some rope and gains entry to the grounds. In the basement, she sees a scientist named Middlemass create a miniature thunderstorm, and then snow; Lucy takes some photographs, but is spotted by Middlemass’ thuggish associate, Wilkie. Evading her pursuer, Lucy leaves the film in an envelope at ‘The Reporter’, only to be captured by Wilkie while she leaves a message on Mr Bishop’s answerphone. The next day, Adam arrives at Lucy’s home, only to find the place occupied by an old couple who deny all knowledge of the girl, insisting that they have lived there for twenty years. Megabyte accompanies Adam on a visit to ‘The Reporter’, but Mr Bishop is away on a fishing holiday. After Megabyte accidentally plays back Lucy’s message, the two friends teleport to the Bayswater house, but they are seen by Middlemass and Wilkie, who knock them out with a blast from the weather machine. Sensing their danger, Ami teleports Adam and Megabytes to her house, where the boys recover and tell their story. Ordered to relocate the weather machine by their American boss, Colonel Cobb, Wilkie and Middlemass move to a warehouse, where they inject Lucy with a truth serum in order to learn the whereabouts of her photos; but when Wilkie visits the newspaper offices, he learns that Mr Bishop’s assistant has sent the photos on to him by courier. Returning to the Bayswater house, Adam, Megabyte and Ami find no trace of the equipment, and are told to leave by Mrs Butterworth, the housekeeper. When the woman leaves in a taxi, Ami and Megabyte follow her to a casting agency in Central London, where they learn that her services as an actress were engaged by a company named ‘Triple C’. After his attempts to question Lucy’s neighbours prove fruitless, Adam answers her phone and speaks to Mr Bishop, whose fishing holiday has been rudely interrupted by the arrival of a courier with the photos. Wilkie and Middlemass arrive at the river where the editor is fishing and use the weather machine to blast him into the water, but Adam immediately teleports to Mr Bishop’s location and saves him from drowning. Together with Megabyte, Adam and Mr Bishop teleport to ‘The Reporter’ to get the photographs developed; however, while they examine the pictures, Wilkie, disguised as a cleaning lady, gains entry to Mr. Bishop’s office and sets a bomb under the editor’s desk. Only Adam’s quick thinking saves them, and they just reach the shelter of a metal cabinet before the device explodes. Meanwhile, Lucy manages to free herself and escape from the warehouse. With her mother’s help, Ami discovers that ‘Triple C’ is breakfast manufacturer Cobb’s Cereal Corporation; she and Megabyte teleport to the firm’s main offices in Florida. Colonel Cobb orders Wilkie and Middlemass to commence Operation Monsoon; Cobb plans to hijack a NASA satellite and link it to the weather machine – by using extreme weather conditions to wipe out his competitor’s crops, the insane Colonel will become the Cereal King of the world. Joining a tour group, Ami and Megabyte gain access to Cobb’s penthouse, but the Colonel renders them unconscious with sleeping gas; Cobb then instructs his two henchmen to leave the Tomorrow People at the bottom of a lift shaft – when the lift descends they will be crushed to death…
